78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band Announcement: Drumming Leadership Transition
The 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band today announces a significant transition in the leadership of its world-renowned drum corps. After 21 years as Leading Drummer, Drew Duthart will be stepping down from his leadership role due to health challenges requiring a hip replacement, which currently prevents him from performing with a snare drum and harness.
Drew’s impact on the 78th has been extraordinary. Under his leadership, the drum corps achieved historic success, including capturing the World Championship title in 2007. His musicianship, dedication, and mentorship have shaped generations of drummers and helped define the band’s distinctive sound and competitive excellence on the world stage.
While stepping away from his leadership position, Drew will remain an active and valued member of the 78th. He will continue to provide guidance, mentorship, and support to the drum corps (and the pipe corps!) and looks forward to returning to performance when his health permits.
The 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band extends its deepest gratitude to Drew Duthart for his remarkable service and contributions, and warmly welcomes Kyle Wardell into his new role.
“I am honoured to take on the role of Lead Drummer for the 78th Fraser Highlanders," said Kyle, adding, "I would like to thank Drew Duthart for his many years of dedication, leadership, and signature style. These characteristics played a pivotal role in shaping the drum corps into the group it is today. My goal is to work with our talented team of drummers to uphold and build on this strong foundation to achieve even more together. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited for the season ahead!"
Said P/M Michael Grey, “While Drew’s role is changing in the band his outstanding contributions continue, and for that I can say, on behalf of the 78th, we are all thankful - and - we're all looking forward to continuing to make great music under Kyle's leadership!”
The band is pleased to announce that Kyle Wardell (pictured left with Drew) will assume the role of Leading Drummer. A long-standing member of the drum corps and professional soloist, Kyle has been mentored by Drew for the past 13 years and represents both continuity and forward momentum for the organization. His deep understanding of the corps’ musical identity and standards ensures the band remains in strong and capable hands.

This leadership transition comes as the 78th prepares for an exciting season, including participation in the prestigious pre-Worlds concert this year in Glasgow, Wednesday, August 12. The band remains committed to excellence and looks forward to building on its legacy with both respect for its past and confidence in its future.
Said Drew, “I have had an amazing journey playing with the 78ths over the past 21 years: too many fun times playing in this band to mention; suffice to say, I’ve had a blast. It’s very unfortunate what has transpired, but life sometimes deals you a bad hand and you have to deal with it. Saying all this, I know the drum corps and the band are in good hands. Under Kyle’s leadership and direction in the back end, I wish him and the corps all the best for the future. It’s been an absolute pleasure to play in this incredible group of pipers and drummers.”
